What Is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a natural holistic therapy based on the discovery that there are points on the feet and hands which correspond to organs, systems and structures within the body and we call these ” Reflexes”.
By using specific pressure techniques to stimulate certain points on the hands or feet, we can detect imbalances which can be effectively treated to restore balance and well-being. It is an ancient natural therapy which uses subtle energies of the feet to balance and harmonise the entire being, leading to health and well-being.
Reflexology can be used to nurture the Pregnant woman and her baby on a physical, emotional and spiritual level from Pre-conception, throughout the Pregnancy, the Birth itself and during the Postnatal Period.
It is based on the principle that there are reflex areas on the feet and hands which correspond to all the organs, systems and parts of the body. When these points are stimulated, tension is eased, nerve and blood supply is increased and the body’s own healing potential is activated.
Reflexology can be used from pre-conception through to labour and for after-care
To assist with Pre-Conception and Fertility
Pre-conceptual care is all about preparing the body and mind for conception, growing and birthing a baby and both men and women are encouraged to have treatments to help regulate the menstrual cycle and to stimulate healthy sperm production.
Reflexology can be used successfully to aid conception and has an excellent reputation in helping couples overcome fertility challenges by balancing all the body systems, regulating cycles and reducing stress and tension, thus creating the best environment for an incoming soul. When your body is in this balanced, relaxed state, the conditions are ideal for conception.
For during Pregnancy
During the nine months of pregnancy a woman’s body goes through enormous physical changes and for some women this can be a long period of discomfort and fatigue with nausea, headaches, backache and other conditions associated with pregnancy, which can often rob us of the joy and excitement of being pregnant and waiting for baby.
Reflexology has shown to be excellent in treating these common conditions and in maintaining balance during this time. It can often help with –
- Morning sickness/nausea
- Pain & discomfort
- Stress & anxiety
- Digestive problems/constipation
To assist with labour
Sometimes women seek some if they go over their due dates and want to avoid a hospital induction. Reflexology helps to relax the body as well as the mind to alleviate anxiety and by working on certain points , this gently encourages the body to go into labour naturally. If it is time then labour may start after a day or so. Reflexology can also be extremely effective during the labour itself by helping to keep Mum focused and relaxed.
And for after the birth
Mums may feel exhausted after the birth and life can be quite hectic compared to before. Some just sail through it all whereas others need a little more ” tender Loving care”. Loss of sleep, breastfeeding problems, frustration and fatigue etc. can all take its toll and Reflexology can be wonderful at this time to cope with some conditions during the postnatal period.
Reflexology is one of the safest, most supportive therapies for both for Mum and baby. Research has shown that regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy can improve the chances of a shorter, less intense labour.
Often the recovery for both Mum and Baby can be quicker, calmer and more relaxed which of course enhances both bonding and breastfeeding.
